What do women tell you after breast reduction surgery?

Many women report that they got relief from their neck and back pain almost overnight. While they were mainly hoping for relief from physical discomfort, they are pleasantly surprised that they look better, too. They feel that their figure is finally in proportion; they are delighted that they can buy proper-fitting clothes (tops that match the bottoms). They tell us that people are talking to their face and not to their breasts!

What is the recovery like?

Women tell us that they have a little bit of soreness for a few days after breast surgery but much less than they expected. This is because the operation mostly involves the soft tissue, as opposed to the stretching of skin and muscle necessary for a breast augmentation.

How soon can I get back to my exercise schedule?

Will I be able to breast feed after a breast reduction?

After breast reduction surgery, nursing may be possible, although bottle supplementation may be necessary. However, not all women are naturally able to breast feed, whether or not they have breast surgery.

Will I need a mammogram?

Each patient's mammogram needs are evaluated on an individual basis. The American Cancer Society recommends that women have a yearly mammogram beginning at age 40; we recommend that a woman with a family history of breast cancer (a mother or a sister) have a mammogram before breast surgery no matter what her age.

Can a breast reduction cause breast cancer?

There is no increased risk of developing breast cancer from having breast reduction surgery. Postoperative breast X-rays or mammography can still be performed. The breast reduction operation does not increase the risk of breast malignancy nor does it interfere with the proper examination and detection of tumors should they occur at any time in the future.

Is a breast reduction covered by insurance?

Some insurance companies will pay for a breast reduction if they consider it medically necessary. After your consultation, Dr. Eisenberg will send photographs and a predetermination letter to the medical director of your insurance company, who will then determine whether or not you meet their criteria.
